Let’s talk about something that’s way more important than most photographers give it credit for—your brand values.
And no, I don’t mean some fluffy corporate-sounding list like “integrity, innovation, excellence” that you copied from a Fortune 500 website and then promptly forgot. I mean the stuff that actually guides your business decisions, sets your tone, attracts the right clients, and repels the wrong ones.
Sound dramatic? It’s not. It’s branding. (And it’s what most photographers skip until something feels… off.)
First, What Are Brand Values?
Brand values are the core beliefs that drive how your horse photography business shows up in the world. They’re what your business stands for—whether you’ve written them down or not.
Think of them as your business’s moral compass. They help you decide:
What kind of clients you want to work with
How you approach your sessions and sales
What kind of content you post
What kind of work makes you feel lit up vs. totally drained
They’re not fluff. They’re your filter.
Why Brand Values Actually Matter for Horse Photographers
Let’s be real: clients are judging you before they ever talk to you.
They’re watching your Instagram Stories.
Scrolling your website.
Talking to people about you.
Reading your captions or emails.
Making assumptions about you, your vibe, and your business.
And if something feels off, they’re out.
Your brand values are how you help them feel that yes, this is my kind of photographer moment—or the opposite, which is also totally fine. (More on that in a second.)
Real example: I had a client follow me online for five years before she booked a session.
She never commented. Never liked a post. But she read everything.
When she finally reached out, she could quote my website back to me.
That’s the power of brand values—they work even when you don’t know someone is watching.
If your personal values don’t align with a brand’s stated values, how likely are you to do business with them?
How Brand Values Help You Attract the Right Clients (and Repel the Wrong Ones)
Here’s the deal: people like doing business with brands that align with their values.
They may not say it out loud. They might not even realize it consciously. But if your brand gives off a vibe that’s totally at odds with theirs, they’re going to move on.
- That’s why you sometimes get ghosted by people who seemed excited.
That’s why some discovery calls feel like a slog.
That’s why you dread certain sessions and love others.
When your brand values are clear, it’s easier to attract the kind of clients you want to work with. The kind that makes you say, “Wait, I get paid to do this?!”
What Happens When You Don’t Have Brand Values?
Your marketing feels aimless
Your messaging sounds like everyone else’s
You say yes to every inquiry—even the red flag ones
You burn out, because you’re not building a business that actually feels like you
Sound familiar? Yeah, it’s not great. Let’s fix that.
What Values Matter in Your Horse Photography Business?
If you’re a one-person show (hi, me too), your brand values are probably an extension of your personal values.
Start with your non-negotiables.
Things like:
“I only sell printed products because I believe in heirlooms, not hard drives.”
“I guide clients through everything, so they never feel lost or awkward.”
“I work with people who treat their horses like family—not props.”
Once you know those? You’re on your way.
Ideally, aim for 3–6 core values that define how you run your business. Can’t get it that small? That’s okay—start with a longer list and narrow it down.
(And if you’re stuck, I’ve got a free guide with 194 brand values for horse photographers—more on that in a sec.)

But Can’t I Just Copy Someone Else’s Values?
Sure. If you want to sound like someone else’s brand.
But here’s the problem with that: your values need to be true. You need to actually believe them. Embody them. Show them.
Because trying to sell a value you don’t live? Exhausting.
Imagine trying to build a business around “organization” when your desk looks like a crime scene and your Lightroom catalog is held together by prayer and panic.
It’s so much easier to own your actual vibe.
Maybe you’re chaotic, creative, and full of enthusiasm. Great! There are clients who will adore you for that.
For example: Ride the Sky’s brand values? Enthusiasm, Creativity, Relationships, Excellence, Organization, and Knowledge.
Those aren’t just words—they show up in how I prep clients, how I photograph horses, and how I mentor other photographers.
That’s what you want—values that are visible in your work, your voice, your decisions.

What If My Business Is “For Everyone”?
Oof. Let’s have a moment of truth.
If your brand tries to appeal to everyone, it connects with no one.
Generic messaging = generic business = burned out photographer.
When you try to speak to all horse people, your message gets watered down. It loses personality. It’s forgettable. And worst of all? It attracts people you don’t actually want to work with.
When you lead with real brand values, here’s what happens:
The wrong people say “eh, not for me” (and move on without wasting your time)
The right people say “oh my gosh, YES” (and become your biggest fans)
How to Choose Your Brand Values (Without Overthinking It)
Brainstorm words that describe how you work, what matters to you, and what you want your clients to experience.
Narrow it down to your top 3–6.
Eliminate anything that feels forced, fake, or “meh.”
If you’re stuck between similar words (like joy, happiness, and enthusiasm), look up the definitions or ask a trusted friend/client to choose the one that best represents you.
Write them somewhere you’ll see them. Bonus points if you work them into your website copy, emails, and client touchpoints.

Final Thoughts: Be Real, Get Booked
Your horse photography business doesn’t need a new logo. It needs you—clear, confident, and aligned with the kind of people you actually want to work with.
So instead of shouting louder on Instagram, try getting clearer about who you are and what you stand for.
When you do that?
You’ll attract clients who feel like kindred spirits.
You’ll book sessions that feel like joy, not stress.
And you’ll build a brand that doesn’t burn you out.
So go on. Define your values. Put them out there. And watch what happens next.

Betsy Bird, M.Photog.Cr., CPP, TPM, TSD, of Ride the Sky Equine Photography, spends her days doing insane things to make animals look at her. Clearly, she’s desperate for attention. When she’s not mentoring photographers, wrangling teenagers, or acting like a total goofball, she’s hanging with Derby—the puppy currently training to be office assistant (jury’s still out on whether “chewing cords” counts as a legitimate job skill).
Betsy has earned both her Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman degrees from the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). She also holds the CPP, TPM, and TSD designations and currently serves on the Board of Directors of both the Professional Photographers of East Tennessee (PPETN) and the Tennessee Professional Photographers Assocation (TNPPA).
An award-winning photographer, Betsy is also a published author, national presenter, and frequent podcast guest. Her book, Equine & Equestrian Photography Poses that Sell, has become a resource for photographers, and she’s been featured on The Profitable Photographer Podcast, The Business Animal Podcast, Cowgirls with Cameras Podcast, The Focal Points Podcast, and more.
Through her digital tools, courses, and mentoring programs, Betsy teaches photographers how to build profitable businesses without the overwhelm. She is an expert in her field (which isn’t that surprising given how much time she actually spends outstanding in a field… get it?).
