When you’re searching for the perfect pet photographer in Chattanooga, here’s the thing you need to know: not all photographers are the same.

Some specialize in timeless wall art you’ll treasure forever. Others might hand you a USB and call it a day. Which is best for you, is a question only you can answer.

But, if you’re going to invest your time, energy, and money into capturing your pet’s unique personality (and trust me, you should), then you need a photographer who gets it. They should get you, your pet, and your needs. Someone who loves your pet as much as you do and can turn those moments into art you’ll adore.

Not sure where to start?

Good news—I’ve got you covered. Here are 13 must-ask questions to make sure you find the perfect match.

So, you might be thinking. Well, I’m here on Ride the Sky Equine’s website so I’ll just hire you. Problem solved!

Before you pat yourself on the back for this masterful decision, here’s the thing.

I might not be the right photographer for you.

I want you to have some great images of your pets – ones that you absolutely love.

I want you to have the photography experience you want – one that you enjoy.

I want you to enjoy working with your photographer – maybe even become…gasp…friends.

I want you to be happy with the final products – and enjoy them in the way you want to for years to come.

Do You Have a Contract? (Hard Pass If They Don’t)

Contracts might not sound glamorous, but they’re your best friend when booking a photographer.

They outline what’s included, set clear expectations, and protect both you and the photographer.

If a photographer doesn’t offer a contract, run. Fast.

Professionalism starts with transparency, and a contract ensures everyone is on the same page.

What’s Your Experience with Pets? (And Why It Matters)

Great Pet Photographers:

Understand how to work safely around animals with cameras and lighting gear

Have knowledge of breed standards and conformation

Recognize signs of an animal in distress

Here’s the truth: taking beautiful images of dogs, cats, and other pets isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s a skill that takes patience, expertise, and a genuine love for animals.

For example, I grew up on a farm surrounded by horses, dogs, rabbits, chickens, and cats, so working with animals has been part of my life forever.

I’ve been professionally photographing animals for over a decade and have taken animal behavior classes to understand our furry friends even better. (Snakes, though? Hard pass.)

When you’re choosing a photographer, make sure they know their way around animals.

Can they handle a nervous dog? Do they know how to read a cat’s body language? Experience isn’t just a bonus—it’s essential for a safe and stress-free session for both you and your pet.

What’s Your Photography Style? (Spoiler Alert: It’s a Big Deal)

Think about what you want from your session.

Are you dreaming of candid, playful shots of your dog mid-zoomie? Or are you more into regal, posed portraits that features your cat as the ruler of the household that he is?

Every photographer has a unique style.

Some are all about the natural light and outdoor energy, while others focus on studio perfection.

Before booking, take a close look at their portfolio. Look at the images on their website, their Instagram feed and other social accounts.

If their images don’t scream exactly what you want, keep scrolling.

And don’t be afraid to ask.

A great photographer will be excited to share their approach and help you figure out if they’re the right fit.

Do you have References or Reviews from Previous Clients? (Because Trust Matters)

Google reviews? Yes, please.

Personal referrals? Even better.

A photographer’s past clients can tell you more about their professionalism, experience, and overall vibe than any portfolio ever could.

Don’t be shy about asking for references.

If a photographer has a loyal fan base, they’ll be happy to connect you with someone who can share their experience.

Bonus: glowing reviews are a great confidence booster when making your decision.

How Will You Help Me Prepare For A Session? (Yes, We Plan for Everything)

A little preparation goes a long way.

That’s why I schedule a creative consult with every client.

We’ll talk about dates, wardrobe choices, locations, and even your pet’s quirks.

Whether your dog is all about fetch or your cat needs some coaxing to leave their throne, we’ll create a plan that fits their vibe.

The goal? A stress-free session that feels totally you.

Feeling prepared makes all the difference. Trust me, we’ve got this.

What Happens If There Is Bad Weather?

Here in Chattanooga, weather can change faster than your dog can grab a snack off the counter. In fact, I had one spring season where I had to reschedule every single spring portrait session due to weather – and some of them more than once!

Having a backup plan is non-negotiable for outdoor sessions.

Ask your photographer about rescheduling options or alternative locations. A little rain shouldn’t ruin the fun—or the photos.

What Happens If My Pet Misbehaves? (Because Chaos Is Part of the Charm)

Let’s face it: pets don’t always cooperate. Sometimes they have zoomies. Sometimes they refuse to sit still. And sometimes they decide the grass is more interesting than the camera.

The good news?

A professional pet photographer knows how to adapt. Whether it’s using toys, treats, a change in location, or a quick break to reset, there’s always a way to bring out your pet’s best side.

Honestly, some of the most memorable photos come from those unplanned moments. So, embrace the chaos. It’s all part of the fun.

What Happens After The Session? (Let’s Break It Down)

After the session, the magic really begins.

First, your photographer will review and cull the images, selecting the best ones that highlight your pet’s unique personality.

From there, they’ll either edit a few samples, fully edit the entire gallery, or prepare proofs for you to review.

This part of the process can take time, depending on their workload and editing style.

For me, I usually do proofs while the editing magic happening after the design consultation.

Once I know what images are going where, then I edit. An image that is going to be a 40×60 inch wall piece is going to have a different edit than an image that will be 8×10 inches in an custom album.

When and How Can I See My Photos? (Spoiler: It’s Worth the Wait)

The photo reveal is one of the best parts of the entire experience. But let’s be clear—every photographer does this differently.

Some send a link to an online gallery, while others (like me) go the extra mile with an in-person reveal.

I prefer sitting down with my clients to go through their images together.

Why? Because seeing your reaction to your pet’s portraits is priceless.

Plus, I’ll guide you through selecting your favorites and planning the best way to display them in your home.

Ask your photographer what their reveal process looks like.

Knowing how and when you’ll see your photos avoids that awkward “um, so when do I get to see them?” text three weeks later.

What Products Do You Offer? ( Hint: More Than a Thumb Drive)

Let’s talk about what you’ll actually get after your session.

Some photographers fall into the “shoot and burn” category. You book them, they show up, they take some photos, and then email you a link to download your files.

Simple? Sure. Memorable? Maybe not so much.

Personally, I’m a boutique, full-service photographer, which means we’re doing more than just snapping a few cute moments.

First, we’ll have a creative consult to plan every detail—wardrobe, location, style—you name it.

After your session, we’ll meet for a design consultation where I’ll help you choose your favorite images and turn them into custom wall art, albums, or folio boxes.

Yes, it’s a more involved process, but the result? Stunning, heirloom-quality artwork you’ll treasure forever.

Are There Restrictions For Sharing the Images Online? (Read the Fine Print)

You’ll probably want to share your pet’s adorable portraits on Instagram or Facebook—who wouldn’t? But, not all photographers allow unrestricted image use.

Some include a print release for personal use, while others have limitations on sharing or on what you can do to the images (helllloooo, Instagram filters, I see you…).

Make sure you know what’s allowed upfront, so there are no surprises when you tag your photographer in a post.

Will The Images Be Retouched or Edited Before I See Them? (Let’s Talk Expectations)

Editing is a big deal in professional photography. It’s what turns great images into wow images. But not all photographers approach this the same way.

Some will show you fully edited galleries from the start, while others might offer a mix of edited samples and unedited proofs. Then there are those who let you select your favorites first and edit only the ones you purchase.

Ask your photographer how they handle this process. It’s better to know upfront what to expect, so there’s no confusion when it’s time for your reveal.

A Few Final Thoughts…

And, there you have it,

All the questions to ask a pet photographer before you book!

All this to say that doing your research in advance and having a conversation (I know, I know, a possible phone call…Eek!) will go a long way to making sure that you get what you want how you want it.

Betsy Bird spends her days doing insane things to make animals look at her. Clearly, she’s desperate for attention. When she’s not acting like a total goofball, she’s mentoring photographers, teaching the business side of photography, wrangling teenagers, or hanging with Derby, the new puppy who is currently training to be the new office assistant (jury’s still out on whether “chewing cords” counts as professional development).
