I meet in person with all my clients in advance of their equestrian portrait sessions. During that meeting, I always ask clients if they have any questions about their upcoming session. Almost without fail, I get the question, “Do I need help with an equestrian portrait session?” In other words, they want to know if they should bring a friend or family member along in case some extra hands are needed.
Do I Need Help with an Equestrian Portrait Session?
It’s always a good idea to plan on an extra pair of hands for your horse photography session. It is even more helpful if you plan on posing with your horse.
I do frequently have an assistant with me – though not always. However, she has certain photography-related tasks to do and isn’t always available for holding horses or checking makeup.
I never turn down extra hands. It never hurts to have some extra eyes making sure that manes are smoothed down, noses are clean, drool is wiped away, ears are up, etc.
If your session involves multiple horses, consider bringing a person for each horse. That way each horse has a person to hold them when they aren’t being photographed.

Betsy Bird, Cr. Photog., CPP, of Ride the Sky Equine Photography spends her days doing insane things to make animals look at her. Clearly, she’s desperate for attention. Outside of acting like a total goofball, she invests in growing her business, mentoring photographers, dealing with her teenagers' angst, and hanging with Nitro, the best dog ever.
Betsy has earned her Photographic Craftsman degree from the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) which honors photographers who contribute to the photographic industry through speaking, mentoring, and publishing. Betsy is also a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) with PPA. The CPP designation is held by fewer than 2,500 photographers nationwide and is a hallmark of consistency, technical skill, artistry, and professionalism.
Additionally, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Professional Photographers of East Tennessee (PPETN) and the Tennessee Professional Photographers Association (TNPPA). She is also a professional member of the Equine Photographers Network (EPN).
